Trial run

OK, we're about to set out for our first day afoot in the capital. Main things on our minds are the weather -- about 34 right now but predicted to stay in the 20s and 30s with possible snow. And the crowds. Figuring out how to move around in the crowds that are expected to show up is a big topic of conversation among the folks in the hotel lobby. The entire capital district will be closed to cars, which puts the whole crowd onto buses, the metro, on foot. Our hotel is at the end of the line for the metro, which I'm hoping is a big plus for us Tuesday. The trains will be empty when they arrive here. I imagine even a few stops down the line as we're headed in, they'll be packed. At any rate, we'll be doing a practice run into the city in a few minutes.

Aside from weather and crowds, today's big buzz is on the opening event this afternoon at the Lincoln Memorial. Aside from the Obamas, the big lineup of entertainers is pretty grand; Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Mary J. Bilge and "others." But they're saying there might be a half million people for just this. So we'll see how Idaho does in the first big crowds.
